The Duke of Sussex has always maintained a strong bond with his late mother, Princess Diana’s family. Growing up with three siblings, Diana had two older sisters, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes, as well as a younger brother, Charles, 9th Earl Spencer. Charles is the custodian of the Althorp estate in Northampton, which holds a special place in the family’s heart.
Recently, Prince Harry discreetly flew from the US to the UK to attend his uncle Lord Robert Fellowes’ funeral in Snettisham, Norfolk. Lord Fellowes, who was married to Diana’s sister, Lady Jane, was a former equerry to the late Princess. During his visit, Harry reportedly stayed at Althorp with his uncle Charles, where his mother Diana is laid to rest on a tree-lined island at the centre of the estate’s Oval Lake.
The Spencer family has always been a pillar of support for William and Harry throughout their lives. Notably, Harry’s uncles, aunts, and cousins were present to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Invictus Games in May. Despite the absence of senior royals at the event, the Spencer family stood by the Duke and his brother, showcasing the strong bond they share.
Prince Harry’s warm relationship with his aunts and uncles was highlighted when he and Prince William unveiled a statue of Diana at Kensington Palace in July 2021, marking what would have been their mother’s 60th birthday. Additionally, the Spencers attended Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding in 2018, with Lady Jane even chosen to give a reading during the ceremony.
Harry has not only taken Meghan to visit his uncle Charles at Althorp but also shared a poignant moment in his memoir, Spare, released in January 2023. Describing the touching scene of rowing across to the private island to pay respects at his mother’s grave, Harry reminisced about the support and love he feels from his family.
This heartfelt connection between Prince Harry and Diana’s family showcases the enduring bond of love, support, and unity that has stood the test of time. From attending funerals to celebrating milestones, the Spencer family has been a constant source of strength for the Duke of Sussex, reminding him of his roots and the legacy his mother left behind. The memories shared and moments cherished with his aunts, uncles, and cousins serve as a testament to the power of family and the importance of staying connected despite the challenges and distances that may separate them.
